Do hand-poked tattoos hurt?
The short answer is, yes. Hand-poked tattoos feel less traumatic to the skin because it is less aggressive, and there is no vibration; however, they tend to take a lot longer so it becomes more about mental fortitude, stamina, and breath.
In my personal opinion, hand-poked hurts slightly less than a machine, but to each their own.
What does the hand-poked method feel like?
A client - and very dear friend of mine - once described the sensation as someone grabbing 5 body hairs with a tweezer, and pulling them out, but it quite literally feels like being poked with a pointy needle.
How is the healing process?
It’s basically the same process as getting a tattoo by machine. Cleaning and moisturizing it daily until the scabs fall off on their own.
Because hand-poking is less abrasive, the healing time is actually a lot quicker than tattooing by machine. On average it takes about 2-3 weeks to fully heal depending on the scale and design.
When do you use a machine, and when do you hand-poke?
Because I am a mother to a young baby and do not have as much time in the day as I used to, I use a machine for mostly all tattoos.
I always do hand-poked tattoos for Goddess Ink sessions. I never use a machine on the areola or nipple area. I feel that those areas should be treated gently and with as much kindness as possible.
Do you tattoo anything?
No. I do not do tattoos that represent hate, depict offensive messages, or anything else that is negative in nature. I do not do tattoos that I feel don’t reflect my style of work. And I do not tattoo folks who I feel do not have energy congruent and in alignment with my own.
